To the Isles of Scilly

23rd April 2022

After a trip ashore to get a shower in the Royal Fowey Yacht Club (very nice and much needed!) we stocked up on ‘victuals’, especially pasties, and headed back onboard, deflated and stowed Terry and set off, west again.

We left the harbour in company with the sailing ship Bessie Ellen https://bessie-ellen.com/ a 116 year old Devon built wooden ketch now operating as a charter vessel. She was heading up to Oban but we were hoping to head direct to the Isles Of Scilly. The Scillies are around 25 miles off Lands End so not particularly far but they are exposed and vulnerable to the weather so often not tenable in yachts. We were lucky though as the easterly air flow has persisted and is forecast to continue; perfect for getting there and then on northwards towards Ireland.

We headed past the Lizard with sails up but engine on as the wind had died away. I spotted our first dolphins and then as it got dark we could see the Wolf Rock light and we started to see a lot more shipping passing to and from the English Channel and Irish Sea.

Overnight Nigel and I took three hour watches each so were both able to get some sleep but were both up by 0600 as we arrived in Hugh Town harbour, St Mary’s and found ourselves a visitor’s buoy. We quickly secured Little Scarlet and went back to our bunks!
